Mumbai University launches course on Swayam portal

A certificate course in communication technology in education is the first Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) to be offered by the University of Mumbai on the central government’s Swayam portal for open learning.
The four-credit certificate course encompasses the new technology used in the field of education, said course coordinator Dhaneshwar Harichandan, who is also the director of the varsity’s Institute of Distance and Open Learning (IDOL).

The course, launched on November 13, is spread over four credits to be completed in 45 hours within 15 weeks.
“The course can be taken up by graduates, post graduates and teachers. It introduces students to the latest trends and concepts in teaching and the field of education. There’s a special focus  on integrating technology  in teaching methods,” said Harichandan.

Videos, e-texts and evaluation material designed by him will be available free of cost  on the HRD ministry’s Swayam portal. “So far, over 3,200 applicants have registered for the course. There is no last date so more people are expected to register,” said Harichandan.  The certificates issued will be affiliated to the University of Mumbai and approved by the University Grants Commission and the HRD ministry.
