For the third consecutive day, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) sounded a yellow alert in Mumbai and its neighbouring districts of Thane, Palghar and Raigad on Saturday, with the possibility of thunderstorms coupled with lightning and gusty winds. While no warning has been issued for Mumbai and Palghar on Sunday, a yellow alert has been extended until Tuesday (September 26) in Thane and Raigad districts.
Speaking to The Indian Express, a senior scientist at IMD, Mumbai, said, “A cyclonic circulation currently lies over south Madhya Maharashtra and its adjoining areas between 3.1 & 5.8 km above mean sea level. Owing to this weather system, Mumbai is on a yellow alert. However, we have issued only a warning for thunderstorms and not heavy rainfall in Mumbai at least. Furthermore, we have not issued any alerts for today (September 24).”
Data furnished by the weather bureau shows that besides this, another cyclonic circulation over northeast Arabian sea and adjoining south Pakistan and Kutch is currently positioned over northeast Arabian sea. “A trough runs from South Interior Karnataka to Comorin area across interior Tamil Nadu extending upto 1.5 km above mean sea level”, further reads an IMD bulletin.
Amid a yellow warning, between Friday and Saturday morning, the Colaba coastal observatory recorded heavy downpour at 77 mm even as the Santacruz observatory remained dry, recording only 1 mm rain during the same period. Meanwhile, on Saturday until evening, the Colaba observatory registered 15.8 mm rain while the Santacruz weather station registered 5.3 mm rainfall.
Responding to questions, meteorologists and weather experts maintained that the stark difference in the rainfall recorded in the city and suburbs is not unusual. Meanwhile, Mahesh Palawat from Skymet Weather Services added that the unusual distribution of rainfall can be attributed to patchy cumulonimbus clouds which develop vertically and bring heavy rainfall in some areas and very little rain in nearby areas.
With moderate showers sweeping the city, the water stock in the seven lakes which supply water to the city touched 98.39 per cent implying that the total quantum of water in the lakes stood at 14.24 million litres on Saturday morning. Last year, the water stock had reached 98.91 per cent while the lake levels stood at 98.82 per cent of the total capacity in 2021, during the same period.
