5-year-old boy who fell into borewell in Ahmednagar district pulled out dead

A rescue operation of at least nine hours to save a five-year-old boy who fell into a borewell in a village in Maharashtra's Ahmednagar district proved futile as he was pulled out dead in the wee hours of Tuesday, officials said. The deceased, Sagar Barela, was the son of a sugarcane worker who hailed from Burhanpur in Madhya Pradesh.

The child fell into the borewell in Kopardi village under Karjat tehsil, around 125 km from Pune city, at around 5 PM on Monday, shortly after he got down from a bullock cart, a police official said.

Personnel of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), along with local police and district administration personnel, launched an operation to rescue him. "The boy was pulled out dead from the borewell at around 2 AM on Tuesday," a police official said. Officials had said the boy was trapped at a depth of 15 feet in the defunct borewell.

Karjat-Jamkhed MLA Rohit Pawar said farmers should take care to properly cover borewells in their fields. "The incident of the death of a labourer's child after falling into a borewell in my constituency is very unfortunate. He could not be saved despite best efforts. But to avoid such incidents, farmers should take care to properly cover the bore wells in their fields," Pawar tweeted. (PTI)

SSC student skips Maths paper, child marriage comes to light

A case of child marriage was discovered in Maharashtra's Beed district after a girl student skipped her Mathematics paper during the ongoing SSC exams in the state, an official said on Tuesday. Police have registered a case against 13 identified persons and 150-200 guests who had attended the wedding in Parli tehsil, the official said.

The country's law prohibits the solemnisation of marriage of a boy who is less than 21 years of age and a girl who is less than 18 years old. The 16-year-old girl did not take her Maths paper on Monday prompting an activist to raise an alert through Childline helpline – 1098.

When gramsevak (village worker) Dnyaneshwar Mukade reached the girl's place, he learnt about the girl's marriage to a 24-year-old man, the official said. Mukade tried to seek details about the alleged illegal act but her relatives did not respond to his questions. A case was then registered under the Child Marriage Restraint Act, 1929, the official said.

Activist Tatwashil Kamble said the wedding was already over when official reached the village to probe into the incident. (PTI)

Realtors want govt to rationalise GST on under-construction properties in a bid to encourage sales

Realty experts and developers want the government to rationalise Goods and Services Tax (GST) on under-construction properties to encourage their sales. The sale of under-construction properties has decreased as buyers have to pay the GST, in addition to stamp duty and registration fees.

Pankaj Kapoor, real estate expert and founder and managing director of Liases Foras, said sales of under-construction property dropping was worrying. “Under-construction property draws GST; therefore, many homebuyers prefer to buy ready-to-move-in properties. Besides, ready-to-move-in properties have fewer risk factors associated with them. Therefore, developers rush to complete the property to draw sales, for which they must borrow money. The increased input cost, besides the interest on borrowings, is added to the property value, which indirectly has to be paid by the customer. Therefore, the government should rationalise the GST.” Read more

Merely moving hand over back and head of minor girl without sexual intent does not amount to outraging modesty: Bombay HC

Merely moving hand over the back and head of a minor girl without any sexual intent does not amount to outraging her modesty, the Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court remarked while quashing the conviction of a 28-year-old man.

The case dates back to 2012 when the convict, then 18 years old, was booked on charges of outraging the modesty of a 12-year-old girl. According to the victim, the accused had moved his hand on her back and head and commented that she had grown up. The order was passed on February 10 and was made available on March 13.

A single bench of Justice Bharati Dangre, while setting aside the conviction, noted there was no sexual intent on the part of the convict and that his utterance indicate he had seen the victim as a child.

"In order to outrage the modesty of a woman, what is most important is having an intention to outrage the modesty. It is not the case of the prosecution that the accused did something more than what has been alleged, that is, moving his hand over the back and head of the victim. Neither the victim girl aged 12-13 years spoke of any bad intention on his part, but what she deposed is she felt bad or indicating some unpleasant act, which made her uncomfortable," the judge said in the order. (PTI)

India will be declared Hindu rashtra by 2026: BJP MLA T Raja Singh

Suspended Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and MLA T. Raja Singh has said India will be declared as "akhand Hindu rashtra" by 2026.

Addressing a programme organised by Hindutva bodies at Rahata in Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra recently, Singh said the names of Ahmednagar and Hyderabad (capital of Telangana) cities will be changed to Ahilyabainagar and Bhagyanagar, respectively.

"Hindus are demanding the country be made an 'Akhand Hindu Rashtra'. If there can be more than 50 Islamic countries and more than 150 Christian nations, why can't India be declared a Hindu Rashtra given that Hindus constitute a majority of its 100 million people?"

"Come what may, in 2025 and 2026, India will be declared as 'Akhand Hindu Rashtra'. I am not saying this, this is the roar of all sadhus and sants and it is their prophecy," said Singh, who represents the Goshamahal constituency in Hyderabad, amid cheers by the crowd. He said renaming Aurangabad and Osmanabad cities in Maharashtra is just the beginning.

Notably, the Union government recently approved the renaming of Aurangabad city as 'Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar' and that of Osmanabad city as 'Dharashiv'. (PTI)

Govt employees on strike for Old Pension Scheme

Lakhs of employees of the Maharashtra government went on strike on Tuesday seeking restoration of the Old Pension Scheme (OPS), a move that could hamper the functioning of the state administration and affect many services.

Paramedics working in hospitals run by the state government and civic bodies, sanitation workers, and teachers have also joined the strike at a time when examinations for classes 10 and 12 are underway. The employees resorted to the strike after the talks between the unions and the state government failed on Monday.

On Tuesday, employees raised slogans like "Only one mission, Restore Old Pension" outside government offices and hospitals. The state had witnessed unseasonal rains last week resulting in large-scale damage to standing crops. The panchnama or loss assessment process, a crucial step to fix the compensation for farmers, could also be affected due to the strike.

A day before, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde had announced a panel comprising senior bureaucrats to look into the demand of state government employees to revert to the Old Pension Scheme. The panel will give its report in a time-bound manner, officials said. Shinde and Deputy Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis had also appealed to the government employees not to go ahead with the strike. (PTI)

Funds going to MLAs of Maha CM's camp, leaving legislators of ally BJP unhappy: Ajit Pawar

Nationalist Congress Party leader Ajit Pawar has said the Eknath Shinde government in Maharashtra was splurging funds to take care of 40 Shiv Sena MLAs while 105 Bharatiya Janata Party legislators remain unhappy.

Shinde became chief minister in June last year with the support of the BJP after his rebellion brought down the Uddhav Thackeray-led Maha Vikas Aghadi government, in which Pawar was deputy CM.

Speaking on the budget on Monday, Pawar, who also handled the finance portfolio in the MVA government, hinted at unease among the BJP MLAs claiming funds were being used for Shiv Sena MLAs. "Funds are being splurged to take care of 40 MLAs. There is doubt whether this is a government of only 40 of the 288 MLAs. Even 105 BJP MLAs are unhappy. They are quiet but there is a lot of unease. The court said if employees continue to hold on to flats then Air India Asset Holding Company would not be able to monetize the land to reduce the burden of Air India's debt. The bench, however, stayed its order for two weeks to let the unions appeal in the Supreme Court.

'Farmers committing suicide is not new issue,' says Maha agriculture minister; Oppn protest in Assembly premises

Opposition legislators Monday staged a protest in the premises of the Maharashtra legislature against Sattar's statement on farmers' suicide in the premises of the state legislature.

State Agriculture Minister Abdul Sattar Sunday had said that the farmers committing suicide is not a new issue and such incidents had been happening for many years.

Sattar was responding to a query by reporters who sought his comment on suicides committed by farmers in his constituency, Sillod, in Aurangabad district recently.

"The issue of farmer suicide is not new. Such incidents are happening for many years. I feel suicides by farmers should not take place anywhere in Maharashtra, including my constituency," said Sattar.

Opposition parties slammed Sattar for his statement with NCP state president Jayant Patil stating that Sattar had a penchant for making such insensitive comments.

At least two farmers had ended their lives in Sillod during March 3 to 12, police had said. However, sources claimed at least six agriculturists had ended their lives in Aurangabad district in the Marathwada region during the same period, prima facie due to indebtedness.

Sattar said that a committee had been set up under Agriculture Commissioner to study this issue, according to the news agency PTI.

Iconic player Leander Paes, who made waves in the world of tennis, was paid a fitting tribute with an art installation that has been grabbing eyeballs in Mumbai for two years now. Situated outside Bandra’s Otters Club, the installation was inaugurated on December 28, 2020 by Aaditya Thackeray, the then guardian minister of Mumbai Suburban district, in the presence of the sporting legend himself.

Created using 500 tennis rackets and high-quality stainless steel to prevent rusting due to the saline coastal winds, the installation aims to inspire the younger generation to explore the world of tennis in an otherwise cricket-crazy nation.

The IMD also issued a heatwave warning for the Konkan region, which included Mumbai.
