CR's Harbour line local trains can now hit top speed of 95 kmph; users to save on trip time

Local trains on the Central Railway's Harbour line now take 2-3 minutes less to cover the distance between Tilak Nagar and Panvel stations as their top speed on this corridor has been increased to 95 kmph from 80 kmph, an official said on Wednesday.

HC upholds hijab ban at Mumbai college; says dress code doesn't violate fundamental rights

The Bombay High Court on Wednesday refused to interfere with a decision taken by a city-based college to impose a ban on hijab, burka and naqab, observing that such rules do not violate students' fundamental rights.

A dress code is meant to maintain discipline which is part of the college's fundamental right to "establish and administer an educational institution", held a division bench of Justices A S Chandurkar and Rajesh Patil.

The dress code was applicable to all students irrespective of religion or caste, the HC said, dismissing a petition filed against the ban by nine girl students.

The students, who are in the second and third year of the science degree course, had moved the high court earlier this month, challenging a directive issued by the Chembur Trombay Education Society's N G Acharya and D K Marathe College imposing a dress code under which students cannot wear a hijab, naqab, burka, stoles, caps and badges on the premises. Mumbai News Today: NCP (SP) urges EC to delist similar symbols for upcoming Maharashtra assembly polls

Ahead of the Maharashtra assembly elections, the Sharad Pawar-led NCP has requested the Election Commission of India to withdraw or exclude certain symbols which it claimed are "deceptively similar" to the "man playing turha" symbol officially allotted to it.

The NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) argued that allocating phonetically similar symbols, such as "Trumpet/Tutari," to Independent candidates has put the party at a significant disadvantage and goes against the principle of creating a level playing field.

It refuted that allocating the "Trumpet" symbol to Independent candidates was appropriate and cited instances in the recently-held Lok Sabha polls wherein similar symbols confused voters, affecting the party's electoral performance in certain constituencies.

The party cited the example of Independent nominee Sanjay Gade who contested from the Satara seat on the Trumpet symbol and garnered 37,062 votes, which led to the defeat of NCP (SP) candidate Shashikant Shinde by a narrow margin of 32,771 votes. (PTI)
