PM Modi going on US tour instead of resolving crisis in violence-hit Manipur, says Uddhav

Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his scheduled visit to the US, and asked why he was going abroad instead of visiting Manipur to resolve the crisis in the violence-hit north-eastern state.

Addressing a state-level convention of his party, the first since the rebellion split Shiv Sena last year, he also dared the Bharatiya Janata Party-led central government to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the country.

"One part of our country is in the grip of violence and Modi hasn't gone there or taken steps to resolve the crisis, but is going to America," Thackeray said.

The PM will be going on a state visit to the US and Egypt from June 20 to 25.

Thackeray alleged that there have been claims that PM Modi stopped the Russia-Ukraine war.

"So Modi should stop the violence in Manipur and restore peace and then we will believe these claims," he added.

More than 100 people have lost their lives in the ethnic violence between Meitei and Kuki community people in Manipur that broke out more than a month ago. (PTI)

As Uddhav and Shinde gear up for foundation day, question about ‘real’ Shiv Sena resurfaces

With Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and former chief minister Uddhav Thackeray gearing up once again to reassert their political might on the Shiv Sena’s foundation day, the question ”who leads the real Shiv Sena?” has resurfaced.

The late Thackeray would address the Shiv Sainiks and give a definite roadmap and message for them. Another highlight was the celebration of the foundation day, and it was watched by one and all. Govt fighting against drug menace; youths must imbibe spiritual strength, moral values for de-addiction: Fadnavis

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday said the Centre has taken several measures to combat the menace of drugs as he appealed to youths to stay away from narcotic substances.

Speaking at an event here, Fadnavis said the government is taking action against drug peddlers and arrests have been made in that connections.

“De-addiction is possible by imbibing spiritual strength and moral values. Police and laws alone cannot ensure de-addiction. Youths themselves also have to move away from addiction,” he said at a function to felicitate Acharya Mahashraman of the Jain Terapanth sect who is in here to spread awareness of de-addiction.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah have taken several initiatives at the national and international levels to combat the menace of drugs, he said. (PTI)

Autorickshaw driver tries to set self alight in front of Maha CM's house; suicide attempt foiled by cops

A 42-year-old autorickshaw driver tried to kill himself in front of Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's house in Thane on Saturday morning but police personnel present at the site foiled his attempt, an official said.

A Wagle Estate police station official said the autorickshaw driver was angry that he was not given a licence so far due to a case registered against his name.

A video of the incident, meanwhile, in which the driver can be seen and heard shouting at the top of his voice, went viral on social media. (PTI)

Maha: Woman functionary of Sena (UBT) attacked with ink, manhandled during event

A group of women allegedly threw ink at a woman office-bearer of the Shiv Sena (UBT) and manhandled her during a programme held in Thane city of Maharashtra, police said on Saturday.

The incident took place at Kalwa on Friday night, they said.

The victim in the alleged incident, Ayodhya Pol, who is the social media coordinator of the Uddhav Thackeray-led party, lodged a complaint at the Kalwa police station. However, no first information report (FIR) has been registered so far in this connection, police said.

Talking to reporters on Saturday morning, Pol said she was invited to an event to mark Ahilyabai Holkar's birth anniversary celebrated recently.

"The organisers of the event had followed all protocols and the banner sent to me earlier carried the pictures of the leaders of Sena (UBT). But when I reached the venue, the banner there had photos of only the local corporator and mine," she said.

Pol said she was earlier told by the organisers that other leaders belonging to the Thackeray group, including Sushma Andhare and local MP Rajan Vichare, would attend the programme. However, none of them was present there. When she asked about it, the organisers gave evasive replies, according to her. (PTI)

Around Town | Craving authentic north Indian food in Mumbai? This new Bandra restaurant should be your next stop

North Indians residing in Mumbai have always had one complaint — the city does not offer authentic food from the part of the country that they hail from. It is to address this grievance that Abhay Chabbra decided to open Jhelum, a cosy 30-seater restaurant offering authentic north Indian cuisine at the busy junction of Pali Naka.

The name, inspired by the river that originates in the Himalayas and flows from Kashmir to North Punjab and Pakistan, is a reflection of his roots, says Chhabra. “My grandfather and our ancestors came from this city called Gujranwala, which is now in Pakistan. And it falls right next to the Jhelum river,” says the 24-year-old third-generation restaurateur. His family moved to India during the Partition, finding refuge at a camp in Chembur. To make ends meet, his grandfather Raj Kumar started a canteen business, serving north Indian food, before launching the popular New Neelam Restaurant and Bar, which was expanded by his son and Abhay’s father Ajay.  Read more

Amid BMC’s revamp plans for Dhobi Ghat, residents seek water, gas supply

It is only 11 am but much of the action at Dhobi Ghat has already unfolded, crescendoed and crashed. The dhobis (traditional washermen) have finished washing hundreds of clothes and are now on a chai break. For some, however, the day is just beginning. Children play peekaboo amid ropes of drying clothes, as some BMC officials set up a makeshift camp of four chairs in the background to undertake a polio drive.

Touted as Asia’s largest open air laundromat, Dhobi Ghat is a listed Grade II B heritage structure which carries out washing, ironing and bleaching of over 1,00,000 clothes daily. Their clientele includes garment manufacturers, restaurants, wedding planners, local laundries among others. Read more

Aurangzeb, bulldozer, hijab: why are moderates Fadnavis and Shivraj sounding so shrill?

Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra Devendra Fadnavis, who once upon a time appealed to the progressive, cosmopolitan elements in Maharashtra, apart from to the BJP’s core constituency, now invokes “Aurangzeb ki aulad. Another BJP colleague of his has dubbed NCP leader Sharad Pawar “the incarnation of Aurangzeb”. Like him or revile him, Pawar is the tallest figure in the state today, and comparing him to the last of the Mughal kings is a risky proposition politically.

Another tall and moderate leader of the BJP is also turning small: the 64-year-old, largely liked “Mamaji” Shivraj Singh Chouhan, about to complete his fourth term as CM of Madhya Pradesh and pitching for a fifth. The row over some Hindu girls allegedly wearing “hijab” in a 1,200-student school in Damoh, leading to bulldozers demolishing parts of the school because these were “illegally constructed” — this tells its own story. Is ‘Karnataka pattern’ acceptable to Uddhav Thackeray, asks Fadnavis

Maharashtra deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis Friday took a jibe at his former ally and Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray over the decision of the Congress government in Karnataka to drop chapters on RSS founder K B Hedgewar and Hindutva ideologue V D Savarkar from textbooks.

Speaking at a rally in Osmanabad, Fadnavis said, “I ask Uddhav Thackeray, is this the Karnataka pattern they are going to bring to Maharashtra? Will Uddhav Thackeray tolerate all this? Or he should declare that he has given up Hindutva ideology,” Fadnavis added. (PTI)

Mumbai’s first underground metro, Line 3, will have some of the deepest underground railway stations in India. The deepest will be the T2 station, 30m below the surface. While most other stations will be located 22-25m below the ground level, the T1 and Sahar Road stations will be deeper. On the Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ metro line, 26 of the 27 stations are underground.
