For the past few weeks, rain activity has eluded Mumbai with the city receiving only 173 mm rainfall in the month of September so far. This is less than 50 per cent of the city’s monthly average of 360 mm.
Data furnished by the IMD showed that between Friday and Saturday morning, the Colaba station registered 0 mm rain while Santacruz station logged 2.4 mm rainfall. Furthermore, while the maximum temperatures hovered around 32 degrees, the minimum temperatures in the suburbs dipped to 25.4 degrees Celsius.
In what is likely to bring a revival of monsoon showers, the IMD has stated that light to moderate rain activity alongside thundershowers is slated to sweep Mumbai from Monday.
Meanwhile, the neighbouring districts of Thane, Palghar and Raigad are in for heavier rain activity, amid a yellow warning issued for the districts between Monday and Tuesday. According to the IMD, thunderstorms coupled with lightning, moderate rainfall and gusty winds reaching the speed of 30-40 kmph are very likely in isolated pockets of the neighbouring districts.
Sunil Kamble, IMD director, Mumbai told The Indian Express, “As of today, there is a cyclonic circulation present over west central Bay of Bengal extending upto mid topo level. This system is likely to move west, north-west wards and since a zone of convergence is likely to prevail over the region, a yellow alert has been issued in Thane and other neighbouring districts.”
In the IMD’s forecast bulletin, a yellow alert stating the possibility of thunderstorms with lightning and heavy rain has been sounded in several districts of Maharashtra, including parts of Marathwada and Vidarbha regions, wherein a yellow warning has been issued from today (Saturday).
The total storage capacity of seven lakes supplying water to Mumbai is 14.47 lakh million litres. It is during the monsoon months that the lakes – Tulsi, Vihar, Bhatsa, Modak Sagar, Tansa, Upper Vaitarna and Middle Vaitarna – get filled, through which water is then supplied to the city throughout the year via a labyrinthine network of pipelines.
