Ahead of the arrival of the monsoon, Mumbai and its suburbs are likely to witness partly cloudy sky along with light drizzle, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) Wednesday.

On Tuesday, several pockets of Mumbai experienced sporadic spells of light showers. As per Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reports, the city division recorded 0.05 mm of rainfall.

Even as the city experienced light showers, the temperature continued to hover at 34 degree Celsius. While the IMD’s Santacruz observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 34 degree, marking a departure of two degrees above normal, the Colaba observatory registered a temperature of 33.8 degree Celsius.

While the official date of the monsoon’s arrival in the city is June 11, it was delayed owing to cyclone Biparjoy. Sushma Nair, Scientist, IMD, said, “During a cyclone, all winds build around it thereby diverting all the moisture present in the atmosphere. As a result of cyclone Biparjoy, the monsoon has been delayed”.

Meanwhile, IMD has said light-intensity rain will sweep across the city over the course of the next five days from Tuesday to Saturday. The weather bureau has also issued a yellow warning, saying some districts of Maharashtra will witness thunderstorms along with gusty winds and lightning. It has also sounded alerts of heat waves in several districts of the state’s Vidarbha region.
