A 35-YEAR-OLD man was killed after the crane he was operating toppled and collapsed while installing a concrete girder (deck) of Mumbai Metro Line 6 at Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road on Sunday morning.

The deceased has been identified as Lovedeep Ravindra Singh (35), a crane operator, who was working on the metro construction site at JVLR near Kanjurmarg.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) is constructing the Metro line-6, an elevated corridor between Jogeshwari and Vikhroli passing through the JVLR where the incident took place. Police said that the incident happened around 6 am near the JVLR signal on a service road where a team was installing a girder between two pillars of an elevated metro line using two cranes.

While one crane was on the road, the crane which collapsed was positioned on the opposite side beside the road. When the cranes lifted the girder, the crane beside the road toppled to one side as the sand sank and subsequently it collapsed with the girder. As the vehicle started toppling, the victim jumped from his cabin to escape but came under the boom of the crane and succumbed to his injuries.

The Kanjurmarg police have registered an accidental death report and is investigating the matter.
