AFTER a wait of almost eight years, the Jogeshwari North flyover, connecting SV Road to Western Express Highway, is expected to be opened to the public by the end of this month.

The deadline for the more than Rs 250-crore project, which was transferred to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), has been extended several times over the past years.

According the civic officials, the work was held up due to a High Court case concerning project affected persons (PAP). “The case was cleared around 20 days ago. The structures that were in the way were demolished last month. We are aiming to complete the construction of the bridge by April 21,” said an official from the bridges department.

The bridge, once open, can improve east-west connectivity as well as facilitate traffic movement. “Vehicles coming from Oshiwara and Lokhandwala will be able to exit on the WEH. The bridge will help to unclutter the heavy traffic on SV Road. Efforts on at a war footing to complete the project in a month’s time,” said SVR Srinivas, additional municipal commissioner.

The 2-km Jogeshwari North bridge starts from Ram Mandir in Jogeshwari East and ends on S V Road. A subsequent project will further extend the road to the start of the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road (east of the WEH), a major connection for the western suburbs with the eastern suburbs. “The tendering process for the second project will begin soon. Meanwhile, we have made the provisions for the second bridge and have constructed the pillars and the work will start after the contractor is appointed,” said an official.
