THE Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has approached the Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) for land at the Sewri end of the port to set up a casting yard for the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL).

“The land will be required for a casting yard at the Sewri end. We have discussed other issues also with the deputy chairman of the Mumbai Port Trust and have received a positive response,”said Metropolitan Commissioner Rahul Asthana. The MbPT is one of the important agencies whose clearance will be needed for the trans harbour link project.

On Friday, senior MMRDA officials, including Asthana, and officials from the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust,MbPT and CIDCO studied the MTHL alignment to determine the problems that the project may encounter at different locations. An interchange near Sewri railway station and the MTHL alignment crosses the Pirpau Jetty near Butcher Island that comes under the jurisdiction of the MbPT. The distance between Sewri to Pirpau Jetty is around 6.5 km. The MTHL will also cross ONGC oil and gas pipeline. While the MTHL will require vertical clearance for the bridge, the project will also require safety clearance from the MbPT. Here, land could be a prime issue.

The MTHL – from Sewri on island side to Nhava on the mainland side – will be 22 km,of which 16.5 km will pass over the sea.
