SOON AFTER the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) proposed an international cricket stadium in Amane area of Thane District along the Samruddhi Mahamarg, the Thane Collector has written to the the road development body seeking clarification if the land can be monetised for sports purposes. The MSRDC had obtained the said land parcel from the Thane Collector’s office during the construction of the Samruddhi Mahamarg. The Collector’s office said that MSRDC had not informed them about their plans regarding the cricket stadium.
An official said the Thane district collector’s office raised a query on how MSRDC could monetise the land through sports. Kailash Jadhav, joint managing director, MSRDC, confirmed the letter and said a reply will be sent soon.
“The Thane district collector has asked how the land could be leased out for the purpose of sports since MSRDC is a road development corporation. A clarification regarding the same will be given since there is a provision for the same,” Jadhav said.
“MSRDC obtained the land parcel from Thane district collector’s office at the time the Samruddhi Mahamarg was being constructed. Therefore, the corporation has to inform the collector whenever the land is leased out, therefore a query was raised which will be addressed,” the official explained.
The MSRDC has proposed an international standard cricket stadium on 50 acres in Amane Thane district along Samruddhi Mahamarg. It earlier floated a tender to lease the said land since the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) had previously showed interest. Since the MSRDC can only offer land via tendering process, it issued a tender for same.
Unlike Mumbai that has two cricket stadiums, Thane district, which comprises six municipal corporations, does not have such a facility. The new facility will cater to those players who usually travel to Mumbai in crowded local trains, the official said.
