Despite the Met department’s prediction of a dry weekend, heavy rains hit the city on Saturday and Sunday and the conditions are expected to prevail for the next two to three days, according to weather officials.

“The offshore trough is still active and the monsoon trough has retained its normal position. Apart from these,an upper air cyclonic circulation has formed over Gujarat. All these factors combined have resulted in good rain not only in the city, but also interiors of Maharashtra,” said Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Director VK Rajeev.

From Saturday morning to Monday evening,Colaba received 169 mm of rainfall and Santacruz received 173.8 mm. Out of this,Colaba and Santacruz received 111.7 mm and 106.4 mm rainfall respectively between Saturday and Sunday morning. The city received 20.9 mm of rainfall and the suburbs received 30 mm between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm on Monday.

“This spell should continue for the next two to three days. It will not be very heavy but it will rain throughout the day,” said Rajeev. This will be accompanied by strong winds and thunder storms, predicted the BBC Weather Bureau.

Any concerns of a weak monsoon which were raised due to below normal rain figures in June are now dispelled, said Rajeev. “The monsoon has reactivated and there is definitely no reason to worry,” he added.
