Monsoon preparations: BMC trims 22,300 trees so far, to complete one lakh trees before June 7
According to senior civic officials, the pruning works have taken a hit across the city owing to the vehicles parked beneath the trees.

Gearing up for the monsoon season, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has completed nearly 20 percent of its pre-monsoon pruning works, having trimmed nearly 22,334 large and dangerous trees so far. The civic body has also issued notices to 4,909 government and private establishments, urging them to undertake all trimming works ahead of monsoon onset.
According to senior civic officials, the pruning works have taken a hit across the city owing to the vehicles parked beneath the trees. In a bid to avoid financial losses, the civic body has appealed to residents to immediately remove the parked vehicles which hinder the operations.
An official told Express, “Often while pruning, the vehicles are parked underneath and a branch or other objects may fall on them. This leads to disputes and disrupts the entire process of trimming. People demand money from BMC for the damages incurred and there is no such provision which lays down the rules for this.”
In a bid to curb losses to life and property, the civic body identifies dangerous as well as dead trees, which often fall owing to strong monsoon winds, and prunes them ahead of monsoon onset. This year, following a survey of the 1.86 lakh large trees in its jurisdiction, the civic body identified one lakh trees along the roadside, which will be trimmed scientifically by June 7.
Much to the grouse of the civic activists and residents, the BMC has, this year, also written to the Mumbai Police seeking cooperation from the latter while carrying out pruning of the trees in Mumbai, in light of the several instances when activists and environment lovers resist pruning the trees.
Despite the appeal to police, officials said that areas like Bandra West, Dadar and Parsi colonies have raised questions during the trimming exercises, disturbing their schedule.
Amid the ongoing drive, the civic body has also issued notices to 4,909 government and private establishments, appealing them to trim trees. “Citizens are requested to contact the respective garden officer of the concerned ward if they wish to prune dangerous trees on private land,” read a civic notice.
