MHADA to develop Malad plot for police housing

The state housing authority will rehabilitate the 2,500 existing families on the plot.

MHADA on Thursday decided to plan a housing scheme on a 23-hectare plot at Malwani, Malad, that was originally allotted for housing Mumbai Police personnel nearly 17 years ago.

The state housing authority will rehabilitate the 2,500 existing families on the plot and give a portion of the additional housing stock generated to the Maharashtra police housing corporation for housing police personnel. The rest would be added to MHADA’s stock of low-cost houses that it sells to the general public through a draw every year.

“We expect to generate 5,000-6,000 additional houses after rehabilitating the current dwellers on the plot. A portion of this would be given to the police housing federation for a charge as per the ratio decided by the authority,” said a MHADA official who did not wish to be named.

The official said the land was allotted to the police housing federation in 1997 for rehabilitation of the dwellers on the plot and using the rest for providing houses to police personnel, but there was no development on the plot for several years. “In 2000-2001, the developer allegedly built 950 houses and sold a majority of them in the open market. A section of the original dwellers on the plot had approached the court. In 2005, MHADA stopped giving any further approvals for development of the plot.”
