With the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar Metro service likely to be commissioned soon, Metro officials along with the city’s fire brigade and police held the last fire evacuation drill on Friday, evacuating passengers to safety within six minutes through various routes.
The drill was conducted at the Airport Road Metro station at 8.30 am with the Metro staff acting as commuters. A Metro rake was stopped close to the station with an announcement that there was fire in in third coach. The same was communicated to the Operation Control Centre, which will be the nerve centre of the entire 11.4-km Metro corridor once it is commissioned.
“The Operation Control Centre came into action and closed the line immediately. All the trains behind were stopped. The station controller was informed and was guided to take the necessary action as per the prescribed guidelines,” said a spokesperson of the Mumbai Metro One Pvt Ltd (MMOPL), which is the special purpose vehicle in charge of the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar Metro in a public-private partnership.
The passengers were directed to the adjoining coach from where walked to the station on a pathway that the MMOPL officials opened. Simultaneously, the staff placed a call to the fire brigade, which rescued stranded passengers from the train to the road using a snorkel lift unit. The MMOPL conducted safety drills as per a central disaster management plan jointly drafted with the BMC.
The Metro stretch in the first phase is currently in the process of obtaining the requisite safety certifications before it can be opened for public use. Officials from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), which is the state government agency implementing the project, hope to commission the line this month itself.
