Slain cop Tukaram Ombles story of grit and determination, leading to the arrest of lone surviving terrorist Ajmal Amir Kasab, may soon be immortalised. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation is studying a proposal to erect a bust of Omble beneath the Girgaum Chowpatty flyover, the spot where the cop took on bullets on 26/11 last year and captured Kasab alive.
Congress leader Rajhans Singh tabled a proposal in the BMC group leaders meeting on Tuesday to honour Omble by erecting a bust in his memory. It was because of Omble that Kasab is alive. The cop did not consider that he was not armed before pouncing on Kasab and taking his AK-47 bullets.
Singh said the bust should be erected below the Chowpatty Bridge as this is the exact spot where the firing took place. The proposal has now been sent to municipal commissioner Jairaj Phatak for recommendation, following which a final decision will be taken.
BJP group leader Ashish Shellar said his party had supported the proposal.
Assistant police inspector Omble from DB Marg Police Station was on night duty at Girgaum Chowpatty on 26/11 when his team received information that a hijacked Skoda,in which Kasab and his partner Abu Ismail were travelling, was approaching the spot. The squad intercepted the vehicle and the ASI got hit by the bullets while trying to disarm Kasab. The team later managed to snatch the AK-47 from Kasab.
Ombles daughter Vaishali said it will be a good move if the BMC erects the bust. It will a perfect tribute to my father who laid down his life for the country. It will be a reminder to the people and the younger generation of his courage and valour.
