The Special Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) court in Thane on Friday sent a gang,arrested for over ten bank robberies,to judicial custody till November 6.
The Kalyan police had arrested Manik Wag,Shyam Thombre,Kiran Borse and Sunny Hatangle last month. They had allegedly broken into several banks in the district.
We tracked the IMEI number of a mobile phone stolen from an employee of Union Bank of Indias Dombivili Branch. We arrested Thombre and that led to the arrest of other accused,two more are absconding. The gang was involved in several robberies and hence was charged under MCOCA, said senior inspector Rahulkumar Yeole.
According to the police,one of the absconding accused,Sonu Kapoor,ran the gang. It was not only involved in robberies in Thane and Dombivili but is also accused of breaking into a Scheduled Bank at Shirdi.
The first case was filed early this year,in the Union Bank robbery,involving Rs 10 lakh and the mobile phones of employees and customers.
They had entered the bank under the pretext of wanting to open an account. They had used toy revolvers to scare the employees, added Yeole.
The special MCOCA court had earlier remanded the group in police custody for 14 days. The judicial custody order came after the police claimed that they had concluded their investigations.
