A 34-YEAR-OLD man who was facing financial trouble put up his Panvel flat on sale on housing portal magic bricks only to end up losing Rs 4.26 lakh and landing into further financial trouble. There have been a growing number of cases registered across the city where fraudsters have been either posing as interested buyers or sellers of properties and duping people.

An officer said that the 34-year-old resides with his family in Bhandup. Owing to some financial trouble, the family decided to put a flat they had purchased in Panvel a few years back for sale. They put up an advertisement on magicbricks.com in October last year. Within a few days, he received a call from a person named Ramsingh who identified himself as a broker.

He told the complainant that he had a client who was interested in the flat he had put up for sale online. He told the complainant to send some photographs of the flat, agreement papers and other details. The complainant sent the concerned details and communicated that he wanted Rs 34 lakhs for the flat.

A few weeks later, Ramsingh contacted the complainant and said that his client Shivshankar Kulkarni was interested in purchasing the flat and the deal was agreed upon for Rs 33.5 lakhs. The complainant also spoke to Kulkarni and told him and the broker to meet him at the Panvel registration office. The duo initially agreed but later made some excuses and did not turn up.

In the coming weeks under various pretexts from broker’s commission to the settlement agreement, Rasmsingh made the complainant pay Rs 1.08 lakh to him but later stopped responding and switched off his phone from December 4. When the complainant contacted the buyer Kulkarni, the latter told him that he too had been trying to reach the broker who was not answering.

Kulkarni said he was willing to go ahead with the purchase without the broker. The complainant again under various reasons from stamp duty to registration deed ended up paying Rs 3.18 lakh to Kulkarni who too stopped responding to him after.

Over the next few weeks after there was no response, he realised that he had been duped, following which he approached the Bhandup police. After conducting an enquiry in the matter, the police have registered an FIR In the matter on Thursday and are investigating the matter.
