A 31-year-old car driver was arrested Saturday half-an-hour after he allegedly ran over two teens on Western Express Highway in Jogeshwari.
Police said Santosh Dubey of Mira Road was on his way to work when the accident occurred. Dubey was driving his Maruti Swift on the south-bound stretch of the highway. He was passing Shankarwadi in Jogeshwari when he allegedly hit 13-year-olds Sagar Mishra and Vikas Shukla who were crossing the highway.
Dubey tried to flee but a couple of bikers gave a chase. Dubey brushed an auto while passing Andheri and hit a bike before crashing into a divider at Vile Parle, said a Jogeshwari police officer.
Meanwhile,witnesses called police control room and an alert was issued on wireless with detailed description of the car.
Coincidentally,the car crashed into the divider a short distance from Vile Parle police station.
When a Vile Parle police team rushed to the spot after hearing the crash,the chasing bikers told them what had happened.
Dubey was taken into custody and later handed over to Jogeshwari police.
Dubey has been arrested and charged with causing injury due to rash and negligent driving. Mishra and Shukla are out of danger, said Vithal Damugade,senior inspector,Vile Parle police station.
