Two police constables posted in the security escort of an undertrial for ferrying him to the court and back have been suspended recently after they allegedly ‘allowed’ the undertrial to escape briefly and then threaten a Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) leader, the police said on Friday.
Police constables Amol Sarkale and Sandeep Suryawanshi, posted with the Local Arms Division (LA-2) Tardeo) have been suspended.
An IPS officer confirmed the development to The Indian Express.
Sarkale and Suryawanshi were posted in the escort security party of undertrial Imran Zaharul Khan who is lodged at the Arthur Road Central Prison.
According to the police sources, Khan, who is facing trial in a narcotics case, was produced in the sessions court on May 16 by the police escort team. After the court hearing, when Khan was supposed to be brought back to the jail, he somehow managed to get out of the custody of the police escort team and went straight to the Jacob Circle office of MNS leader Amit Matkar.
Khan, who had tied a handkerchief on his face, allegedly abused and threatened Matkar and went back to the escort team which dropped him back to the prison.
Khan has been in jail ever since he was arrested by the crime branch in December 2024 in a NDPS case involving alleged smuggling of 40 kilogram of cannabis.
On May 22, Matkar approached Agripada police and submitted a police complaint along with the footage of CCTV outside his office. Police registered on a Non-Cognizable (NC) complaint.
After the police complaint, the Local Arms Division was informed about the incident.
Taking serious note of the issue, the senior officers from the armed police suspended both the constables.
“We have suspended both the police constables responsible for escorting the undertrial. Such practice maligns police’s image in public and cannot be tolerated in a disciplined force like Mumbai police. Hence, they have been suspended pending an inquiry,” said a senior police officer from the armed police.
After the Inquiry is concluded and their culpability and role is ascertained, the quantum of punishment for their act would be decided, another officer said.
