Lessons to prevent,tackle disasters

Citizens’ group AGNI on Sunday organised a disaster management training programme at Holy Family Church in Chakala,Andheri East.

Citizens’ group AGNI on Sunday organised a disaster management training programme at Holy Family Church in Chakala,Andheri East.

The participants learned techniques of fire-fighting,first-aid and basic measures required to save lives.

“The event was organised to teach people how to prevent and tackle crisis situations. At the end of the course, the participants were asked to douse a flame using fire extinguisher,” said Rajesh Shirke (43),a certified safety auditor and instructor.

“One has to stay calm and use his presence of mind in a disaster situation. Simple techniques were taught during the session,” said James John,AGNI coordinator.

Balbina Lobo (42),a resident of Marol,Andheri, said,“The two-day Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation disaster management training programme last year could not incorporate practical training for all. There were too many participants and hence I did not get a chance to learn how to use a fire-extinguisher. Here, everyone took a turn at it.”

Sheeba Nair (38),a teacher who took her students for the programme said,“These are the life-skills I wanted my students to learn. We think accidents like gas pipe leaks can never happen with us. But in case anything happens at least we can help rescue others and ourselves.”

The forum is now planning a free-of-cost all-day training session for fire-fighting,disaster management, and life-saving and first-aid each that will be open to all citizens.
