Konkan Rly cops foil train robbery

A robbery attempt on Veraval-Trivandrum Express was averted on Thursday night after the Railway Protection Force,Konkan Railway, beefed up the security on the train.

A robbery attempt on Veraval-Trivandrum Express was averted on Thursday night after the Railway Protection Force,Konkan Railway, beefed up the security on the train. The incident took place when the train was between Kolad and Mangaon stations.

According to the RPF,Konkan Railway,an unknown person who was hiding in the center buffer between coaches S1 and S2 pulled the chain to stop the train. RPF Constable Manoj Kumar, who was in S1 coach, tried to apprehend the accused. Soon after the train was stopped, six more persons boarded the train with an intention to loot the passengers.

However,a RPF squad lead by Inspector A R Subramaniyan, who was in the train, started chasing the dacoits. On seeing the armed RPF staff, the dacoits got off the train and fled towards the nearby bushes and began pelting stones at RPF. However, they escaped taking advantage of the darkness and green cover. It is believed that the dacoits have the modus operandi of stopping the train midway and looting the passengers

A source at Konkan Railway said,“In this train, there was a group of businessmen from Gujarat who was travelling to south to purchase clothes. The dacoits might be targeting this group. However, due to the extra vigilance by the Konkan Railway’s RPF,the robbery was averted.” Railway sources said,“Due to increase in such incidents in the past few days around Panvel,Konkan had stepped up its vigilance in the night trains. Most of the trains are either Gujarat bound or start from Gujarat. From Panvel to Roha, there is no policing.”

VK Dhaka,Chief Security commissioner,RPF,Konkan Railways, said,“Since the area where the incident happened is near the highway,it is an easy target for the dacoits. There were couple of complaints of thefts and dacoities in our area,so,we formed a special team on our route to look into such incidents.”

Vaishali Patange, chief pubic relation officer,Konkan Railway, said,“It was found that there was no report of missing valuables or luggage in the train. The Managing Director of Konkan Railway,Anurag Mishra, appreciated the RPF for their courage. He has urged passengers to report about suspicious persons to the railway staff.”
