With work on the King’s Circle flyover in Central Mumbai entering the final phase, officials of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) said the flyover will be opened for traffic in May. As per MMRDA,around 98 per cent of the work has been done.

Dilip Kawathkar,Joint Project Director (PR),MMRDA,said,“The construction of only three piers was due when we approached the traffic police to close the Aurora flyover to carry out merger works. The approval has come and traffic has been closed. Two of the three piers have already been constructed. The flyover will be opened to public in May 2011.”

The piers are to be built near Maheshwari Garden towards the North side. There are around nine traffic junctions between Jijamata Udyan and Suman Nagar. Motorists will be able to bypass these junctions by using a series of flyovers that are under construction.

The 1.5-km arm of the King’s Circle flyover between Ruia College Junction up to Aurora Talkies would serve nearly one lakh commuters every day. “The congestion on this road will be reduced drastically with substantial reduction in travel time for north and south-bound motorists. This will also reduce fuel consumption and help reduce carbon footprints,” said Kawathkar.
