Nearly 100 journalists gathered outside the Times of India building and the BMC headquarters on Friday in protest against the attack on the publications office by Shiv Sena workers on January 28.
The Shiv Sainiks were reportedly irked by a report published in the Times Groups Marathi daily Maharashtra Times claiming that party MP from Amravati Anandrao Adsul was planning to defect to the NCP. A mob of over 50 men carrying saffron flags had burnt copies of Maharashtra Times in front of the building. They had also barged into the building and damaged property in its lobby.
The journalists later marched towards Azad Maidan,where they were joined by other mediapersons. Press Club president Gurbir Singh condemn the attack. These attacks are against press freedom. We have been seeking a law to protect journalists from such attacks,and now this attack further proves that such a law is needed. The guilty should not be allowed to escape scot-free.
IBN Lokmat editor Nikhil Wagle said only strict action could deter such attacks. The government should take up this issue and ensure that a law is passed. It will ensure the arrest of hooligans working for political leaders. If the state government does not want to bring in such a law,we will appeal to the Prime Minister to make this a Central law, he said.
Maharashtra Times editor Ashok Panvalkar said,Attacks like these will continue until the government brings in a law to safeguard journalists. The messenger should not be killed.
