Jaya Chedda,on trial for the murder of former husband matka king Suresh Bhagat, owes over Rs 2 lakh to the state government. The amount was spent on the security cover provided by the police to Chedda while she was undergoing treatment in private hospitals.
Last week, the Byculla Jail Superintendent submitted a report to the sessions court quoting the expenditure amount. Between December 2011 and February this year,Chedda was admitted to Saifee Hospital apparently for post-liposuction complications and arthritis. One of the conditions under which the sessions court had granted her permission to seek treatment in a private hospital was that she would foot the bill for the security cover.
However, after she failed to pay the amount, the state government sent a query to the jail authorities who then sent a report to the court. Chedda has spent over 500 days in the hospital, mostly in a private hospital, since her arrest in August 2008, said special public prosecutor Kalpana Chavan.
On several occasions, the prosecution had informed the court that Chedda had been trying to mislead authorities with constant extensions sought on medical grounds. Every time she is sent to the hospital,a team of four officers have to be provided to her. She was supposed to pay for the security cover for her recent hospital visit, but she didnt, said Byculla Jail Superintendent Satish Karnik.
The report compiled by the jail authorities stated the number of days Chedda spent in the hospital, her health complications cited, and the money spent on the medical treatment.
The treatment she seeks is not available at JJ Hospital. So,she has to be sent to a private hospital. However,if she is able to get expensive treatment in private hospitals, she has to pay up for the security cover too, said Chavan.
