Hire women constables on priority basis: HC

In a suo motu petition on the safety of women commuters, the Bombay High Court on Friday asked the Railway Board to consider giving priority to the recruitment of women constables.

In an earlier hearing,Inspector General and Security Commissioner of the Railway Protection Force Anil Sharma said in an affidavit that out of 2,638 posts, which were proposed by the RPF,only 225 have been sanctioned for the state by the Railway Board.

Arguing for the Railway Board, lawyer Suresh Kumar told the court on Friday that the recruitment process is on. Chief Justice Mohit Shah said,“At least the posts of women constables should be filled as quickly as possible. If you wait for the entire recruitment process to get over,it could take five or six years.”

On the proposal to make molestation a non-bailable offence, government Rajesh Behare told the court the interim report on the subject will be submitted to the state Home Department by December 31 this year. The case has been adjourned for two weeks.

No relief for Nidhi Gupta’s husband

The Bombay High Court on Friday refused to grant relief to the husband and parents-in-law of Nidhi Gupta, who jumped from a highrise after pushing her two children to death earlier this year.

Gupta’s father Bimal had lodged a harassment complaint with the Dindoshi police, following which her husband Rakesh and parents-in-law Murarilal and Sangita were arrested. All three were later released on bail. The trio approached the court seeking quashing of the FIR against them for harassment and abetment to suicide.

Appearing for the petitioners,Ashok Sarogi told the court that nowhere in the suicide note or in Bimal Gupta’s statement was there any mention of harassment by in-laws or husband. However, the Division Bench of Justices A M Khanwilkar and P D Kode said,“The investigation is still on. At this stage, this petition is premature and cannot be entertained. The accused can seek remedy after the chargesheet is filed.”
