Following a week of moderate monsoon, Mumbai recorded the highest July rainfall this season for 24 hours till 8.30 am on Tuesday, with over 100 millimetres, even as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) extended the orange alert issued for Mumbai and Thane.
According to IMD data, the Santacruz observatory recorded 120 mm of rainfall, while the weather station at Colaba recorded 106 mm of rainfall between Monday and 8.30 am Tuesday. On Tuesday till 5.30 pm, the Santacruz station registered 16 mm of rain whereas coastal Colaba station received 24.6 mm.
IMD scientist Sushma Nair told The Indian Express that the city is likely to experience a more intense spell of monsoon showers on Wednesday, while a red alert was issued for the neighbouring districts of Palghar and Raigad, indicating possibility of heavy to very rainfall with spells of extremely heavy rainfall in isolated pockets.
Scientists and weather experts have attributed the strong monsoon revival to the formation of cyclonic circulation in southern Jharkhand and neighbouring regions. “Monsoon trough situation is looking favourable over the next few days. In the next 48 hours, another cyclonic circulation is slated to develop in the north western Bay of Bengal. Owing to these synoptic situations, we have issued warnings for Mumbai and other districts of Maharashtra,” read a bulletin issued by IMD Mumbai.
With the monsoon reviving, mercury levels dipped in Mumbai. Santacruz recorded maximum temperatures of 27.6 degrees Celsius — three degrees below normal, while Colaba recorded 28 degrees Celsius — two degrees below the average temperature.
Even as heavy rain battered the city, the water stock level witnessed a marginal rise. On Tuesday, the water level in the seven lakes that supply water to the city stood at 35.70 per cent of the total capacity. Last year, on the same date, the level was at 84.41 per cent, while in 2021, the levels touched 19.83 per cent during the same period.
While in 2022, monsoon onset happened on June 11, this year, the city witnessed one of the monsoon delayed recorded onsets of monsoon with the monsoon arriving on June 25.
