The global financial turmoil notwithstanding,800 offers have been made to the students of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT),Bombay, till December 20. Their campus placements started from December 1. Over 60 students have been recruited by multinational companies for their global requirement.
The institute has seen an increased access to international companies this year. For the first time,Microsoft and Google had come to IIT Bombay to hire for their global operations. In terms of the number of international companies, which do not have operations in India,we have seen an increase this year. While four to five such companies had come to IIT Bombay last academic year, the number has doubled this year, said Ravi Sinha, professor in-charge of placements at IIT Bombay.
Some of the big companies this year include Microsoft,Sony,Goldman Sachs,Google,Facebook,Boston Consulting Group,Shell and Schlumberger. Despite the economic downturn, the number of offers this year are on par with last year and in several cases,it has gone up. This shows the faith companies have in our students, irrespective of the market situation, said Sinha.
Placements started on a good note from day one itself, which saw a 20 per cent increase in the number of jobs offered to the students from the previous academic year; 142 job offers were made by 28 companies on the first day. Students had a variety of sectors and profiles to choose from, even as the initial part of the placement season was dominated by engineering,IT,management-consulting,finance and the FMCG ssectors.
The technical sector continued to be a favourite among students and a large number of students showed inclination towards engineering and technology firms. A large proportion of students have shown their preference for such job opportunities, which can be primarily attributed to attractive work profiles offered to IIT graduates by engineering and technology firms. Close to 50 offers have been made by the management consulting firms and nearly 60 by the financial services firms that visited the campus. These organisations work with large corporations across the globe and assist them in resolving complex business problems, said the statement.
