IIT-B placements begin on positive note

Students had reasons to smile as final campus placements at the Indian Institute of Technology,Bombay, started on a positive note on Thursday.

Students had reasons to smile as final campus placements at the Indian Institute of Technology,(IIT),Bombay, started on a positive note on Thursday. Despite an uncertain economy and the global financial crisis, salaries being offered were up by 10-20 per cent from last year.

Companies have an upbeat hiring plan and the institute expects an increase in the number of companies as the placement season progresses, they added. “The mood is quite upbeat and placements have started on a good note. Despite an unsettled economy, the fact that over 200 companies have confirmed their participation in the campus placements for the month of December alone is a very good indication for the institute and its students,” said Ravi Sinha,professor-in-charge of placements at IIT Bombay.

The figures are also significant as the number of good quality pre-placement offers which were sufficiently high paying, was meagre this year at IIT Bombay compared to last year.

Around 1,300 students (Btech,Mtech, dual degree,MSc,MPhil and PhD) are part of the final placements this year. While companies start visiting the Powai campus from August onwards, formal interviews start from December 1.

The first day saw 400 students participating in the placement process. While 18 companies conducted interviews in the first slot,12 companies were scheduled in the second slot on day one. The profiles being offered on the first day were a mixed bag, including technical, engineering, financial analyst work and consulting. The institute said students were looking for exciting job opportunities that provide learning opportunities.

“Salaries have never being an overriding factor for students while choosing a job. They are looking at diverse profiles. They are keen to take up challenges and are looking at offers which provide an exciting job environment. Students at IIT Bombay have never been inclined towards more routine-type jobs, even if they may be better paying,” said Sinha.

In the previous academic year,262 organisations participated in the campus placement and made 958 offers. Further, last year, while 286 students got job offers where the gross salary was over Rs 8.5 lakh per annum,135 students were offered jobs between Rs 7 and Rs 8.5 lakh per annum.
