Amid ongoing infrastructure development at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, the institute has given a Rs 542.37-crore contract to Capacit’e Infraprojects to construct a building for research and academic purpose on a fast-track basis. The project will entail construction of the entire building within 15 to18 months as against the regular time of two-and-a-half years or more.

As the Powai-based prestigious institute of technology is growing, in order to meet its infrastructural needs, the IIT Bombay has decided to take-up this novel idea of fast-track building construction, after having witnessed successful projects of similar kind. This, according to IIT Bombay, will ensure time efficiency and quicker completion of infrastructure development projects.

The project involves multiple phases; the first one involves two buildings — both ground plus nine floors — which are for academic and research purposes. These two buildings to be built in the first phase are Research Hub and Drone Centre.

“The research hub, which will be 17,000 square metres in area, will be used for research and academic activities. The Drone Centre, which will be 12,000 square metres, will be used for research activities involving drones and some administrative offices. While conceptual design is completed, detailed designing is in process for both buildings. The tenure of 15-18months will include the entire process from designing of the structure to final possession,” said an official from the institute administration adding that these will be composite steel buildings, most of which will be steel.

In a statement issued by the Capacit’e Infraprojects Limited, the scope of project includes construction of fast track buildings, including design drawing, finishing works, water supply & sanitary installations, internal & external electrical installation, LAN, WIFI, CCTV, fire-fighting system, automatic fire alarm & PA system, solar PV system, telephone data system, lifts, HVAC, substation equipment, DG set, underground water tank and external development, etc.

Last year, the IIT Bombay declared its plan of Rs 2,000-crore major infrastructural makeover in the coming years, which will include capacity building of hostels, new academic structures to facilitate modern teaching learning concepts, research laboratories among all.
