Here’s how cops discourage drunken driving

The car was smashed in an accident in Trombay a couple of weeks back. Senior Police Inspector Dilip Hemmady from the Colaba traffic division said,“The idea was suggested by DCP Harish Baijal and the wrecked car was brought in on Saturday,a day before the marathon was scheduled. We wanted to display the vehicle before the marathon so that maximum people could see what drunk driving leads to. The main purpose of placing it at prominent places in our jurisdiction was to make people aware of the ill effects of drunken driving.”

Hemmady said that the vehicle at display was involved in a drunken driving incident at Trombay 10 days back.

“So far,we have only one vehicle that was put up near Fashion Street till this afternoon and has now been shifted to CST junction. Within the next few days,the vehicle shall be moved to other spots throughout the jurisdiction and be kept at those spots for a day or two.”

When contacted,DCP (Traffic) Harish Baijal said,“The idea was finalised in collaboration with the Ogilvy & Mather advertising agency. We primarily wanted to convey the fact that drunken driving can take lives. What happened to the occupants of this vehicle could happen to anyone driving under the influence of alcohol.”

He also said,“The image of the vehicle is a hard hitting sight. And we have devised a method of placing the vehicle at different parts of the city during different times of the day keeping in mind that maximum motorists should view it. This new tactic will hopefully spread more awareness about the dangers of drunk driving.”
