Heavy rainfall affects Central Rly services

Heavy and continuous rain paralysed life for the second day in a row in Mumbai and Thane as suburban services, especially those run by Central Railway (CR) were hit.

Heavy and continuous rain paralysed life for the second day in a row in Mumbai and Thane as suburban services, especially those run by Central Railway (CR) were hit. Till 5 pm on Tuesday, the CR cancelled over 150 trains.

Waterlogging on railway tracks was reported from Kalyan and other low lying areas. Railway sources said the number of commuters was 50 per cent of what it is on an average day. However, bunching of trains resulted in thousands of commuters stranded at stations.

Train movement on the Kalyan-Karjat-Khopoli and Kalyan-Karjat-Kasara sections was disrupted with over four inches of water on the tracks. “Kalyan-Kasara and Kalyan-Karjat services were stopped for over two hours due to signal failure at Kalyan and other stations,” said a source. There was heavy bunching of trains on both the ends of Kalyan station in the morning hours.

A K Singh, public relations officer,CR,said,“Trains were running at least an hour late on the Main Line while,Harbour and Western line services were 10-15 minutes late.” He expected services during evening peak hours to run as per schedule. During this period, continuous announcements were being made at the stations.

“Points and crossings in Kalyan were closed. This resulted in bunching of trains and delays,” said Singh. After 2 pm,a similar situation was witnessed between CST and Byculla, but things returned to normal after a while.

“Due to waterlogging, trains stopped and commuters were seen walking on tracks,” a commuter said.
