MMRDA has also initiated a structural audit of glass panels at other metro stations. Yellow glass panels from the facade of the elevated Metro line 2A –Mandpeshwar IC Colony metro station fell onto an auto-rickshaw on Wednesday, however, no one was injured. In response to the incident, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), which implemented the Metro line 2A and line 7, has decided to promptly remove the glass panels from the affected area of the Mandpeshwar IC Colony metro station.
Meanwhile, the MMRDA has also initiated a structural audit of glass panels at other metro stations as well. They have identified that of 17 metro stations on Line 2A enrouted to Dahisar East to Andheri East, only three stations have glass facades, said the official.
As per MMRDA, the glass panels in question, along with those at other stations, will be replaced with louvers or suitable arrangements. This replacement will be carried out by the contractor M/s Godrej & Boyce Mfg Company Ltd at their own cost.
The Mumbai Metro Line 2A project was executed by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) on behalf of Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), which takes care of civil construction work of the elevated metro lines in MMR.
The yellow glass panels that fell were part of the facade of the metro structure and were mounted on MS/Aluminium frames. To prevent similar incidents, additional safety measures are being implemented. These include the use of anti-fall screws and mechanical fasteners for the granite stone cladding whose height exceeds 1.2 metres, said the official.
