Sleuths of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) have recently busted two gangs for allegedly pilfering goods from parcels in coaches of long distance trains on the Central Railway. The police arrested 11 people in an operation conducted over the past one month.
In the wake of numerous complaints of parcel thefts,a RPF team, headed by M K Mishra, was formed to nab the accused. These thefts would invariably cause huge losses to the Railways, which had to pay compensation to the persons who have booked the consignments.
Based on a tip-off,a trap was laid at CST and the team detained Ahemadulla Abdula Sheikh on December 11. Sheikh was found in possession of a consignment booked to be transported in the Howrah-bound train. The interrogation revealed that Sheikh was part of a gang which had eight members.
According to the police, the gang used to steal parcels lying unattended at stations and transfer its content to large polythene bags. They then used to sell the stolen items at very cheap rates on footpaths near Kurla,Bandra and Andheri. Police have seized mobile phones, accessories, batteries, torches etc. worth Rs 64,000. Seven persons were later arrested, while the eighth accused is still absconding. Till now, five accused have got bail from the court and three are still in police custody.
The police arrested four members of another gang on November 11. This gang used to break the lock of the luggage coach of outstation trains and steal the parcels. The accused have been identified as Moinuddin,Kashimani Madhaswami,Aslam Saiyed and Shankar Devrada Naidu. The police are on the lookout for two others,Raja and Vikram.
