These are busy days in London with not just the latest edition of the London Fashion Week in progress, but a number of parallel fashion events taking place as well. Closer home, the last few days have seen over enthusiastic sharing of news that not one but a clutch of Indian designers are showcasing at the London Fashion Week (September 12-16) with several press releases pouring in.
While it’s all too convenient for anyone doing anything fashionable in London during this time to say they are part of the ongoing week, a closer look at the official schedule sets the record straight.
“A friend of mine got in touch and suggested I showcase my work during the fashion week. There are six international designers who are also part of this showcase,” said Syiem. Known for using fabrics like Ryndia that is handwoven in Meghalaya, Syiem’s collection titled
“Amaranthine” celebrates, what he calls “slow fashion”. “The idea is to step back and take things slow in today’s fast-paced life. We need to appreciate nature,” says Syiem, who has used natural dyes in the collection.
Joining him in the multi-designer showcase at the Fashion International event on the same day is Poonawalla. She would be showcasing her collection “Kaleidoscope Karma”. Colour-block patterns have been a signature style of the designer, and this time around, she has also used geometric prints. “The prints and colours of this collection have been inspired by the flow of energy in the chakras of the human body,” says the designer. The silhouettes are contemporary and free flowing.
Also making the most of this fashion week is India-born, Dubai-based designer Hema Kaul who presented her collection “Summer Sorbet” at the London Fashion Week’s “off-schedule” show presented by Fashion Scout, a platform to showcase international design talent, on Friday. This was Kaul’s third season at London and her collection highlighted “florals and femininity” with resortwear as well as cocktail dresses.
Day two of the Fashion Scout show (September 13) will also see designer Shilpa Chavan present a new collection, “Disco Denimals”, under her label Little Shilpa.
