French Connection

The newly opened Marie Antoinette in Bandra has some of the best macaroons and financiers in town.

It is perhaps the protagonist in Sofia Coppola’s movie Marie Antoinette and not the French queen herself that prompted the French couple—Severine and Marc— to name their patisserie after her. Coppola’s character, only loosely based on the controversial queen, surrounded herself with pyramids of pastries and often followed a macaroon-diet. The couple,on their part, has tried to offer patrons similar French delicacies at their quaint yet contemporary cosy Bandra outlet.

Situated off Carter Road in a narrow bylane,Marie Antoinette is a tad tough to locate. While people are aware of the new coffee shop in the neighbourhood, most struggle the pronunciation of the name. But the warm welcome we receive upon arrival makes up for it.

Since macaroons are what they specialise in,ordering a box becomes quintessential. They come in different flavours — chocolate, caramel, coffee, banana, strawberry, raspberry and apple. Priced at Rs 40 each, they are fresh and smooth — the shell almost melting in your mouth. But the pick of the lot are caramel, chocolate and coffee, which could give most macaroon makers a tough competition. There are more options for desserts. A piece of chocolate cake for Rs 90 and Apple Pie for Rs 120.

The cafe also specialises in financiers. Financiers are French cakes and,at the cafe, they are available in banana, apple and strawberry.

After a sugar rush,we decide to balance it out with their savoury items. Their savoury menu may seem too limited to those who love their sandwiches, bagels and puff pastry, and comprises only a handful varieties of quiches apart from the paninis. We opt for a chicken salad panini, the only non-vegetarian dish in the menu. Although soft and flavourful,it does not fare better than the mushroom variety.

For beverage lovers, there is plenty you can choose from. While Cafe Latte,Cappuccino,Cafe Mocha,Expresso are regular options,it is pleasantly surprising that a French cafe serves Indian and masala tea. The latter could do with fewer spices. The strawberry shake, however,is thick and made to perfection. Chocolate lovers can opt for Hot Chocolate and the health conscious can choose from a variety of juices.

For a French-themed eatery, the food at Marie Antoinette isn’t as novel as one expects. But the space makes it a good option for a laid-back coffee with friends.
