The first phase of the national census, due to end today, will now go on for another four weeks. The BMC announced the extension following a communication from the Centre.

The BMC had completed most of the work; the extension will help complete work on the remaining 10 per cent houses, which had been found locked during the designated period,May 1-June 15,for phase one that includes house-listing and data entry for the national population register. Around 6 per cent of the total houses are permanently locked.

“A major bulk of the work is over but 10 per cent of the houses were found locked because of the vacation. But since schools reopened on Monday, families are expected to return over the next couple of weeks. The Centre has given a provision to extend the deadline by another four weeks. Simultaneously, our helplines have started functioning in all ward offices and people can call up our enumerators if they have been out of Mumbai and not been counted for any other reason,” said additional municipal commissioner Manisha Mhaiskar.

The helplines will be in service for the next four weeks.

Over 4,000 supervisors and 27,358 enumerators had been assigned to conduct the survey over the past 45 days. These officials, largely employees of the BMC and government and semi-government organisations, will be relieved of the duty. “For the remaining 10 per cent of the houses, employees of the public health department who had not participated in phase one will be handed over the responsibility,” Mhaiskar said.
