Former Mumbai Police commissioner and ex-Maharashtra director general of police Sanjay Pandey on Friday announced that he will be contesting the upcoming Maharashtra Assembly polls from Mumbai.

Pandey, a retired IPS officer, said he has decided to contest the polls from Versova. He has been interested in joining politics for a long time now.

“I will be contesting the upcoming Assembly polls. I have been interested in joining politics for a long time now but didn’t get the opportunity earlier. In Lok Sabha too I tried but it did not materialise,” Pandey said.

Pandey was looking to contest the Lok Sabha polls from the Mumbai-North West seat as an Independent candidate as many citizens from this area have been insisting that he contest the polls from this seat. Pandey was earlier known for his “citizens first approach” in various decisions he took during his short stint as Mumbai police commissioner.

Considered close to Uddhav Thackeray, Pandey was arrested in June 2022 by central agencies in connection with the National Stock Exchange (NSE) phone-tapping case. When he was the Mumbai police commissioner, Thackeray was the chief minister of Maharashtra in the MVA government.

Appointed as the Mumbai Police Commissioner on February 18, 2022, Pandey retired from service on June 30 of the same year. An IIT-Kanpur alumnus and 1986 batch IPS officer, Pandey was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in July and September 2022, respectively, in connection with the NSE phone tapping case. He spent nearly five months behind bars following his arrest.

The Delhi High Court on December 8, 2022, granted him bail in the money-laundering case of ED. While granting bail to the retired IPS officer, the High Court said though the CBI had booked Pandey for cheating, criminal breach of trust, and also on bribery charges, none of the ingredients of these offences were found in the case. The bribery charges did not apply to the case as there was no allegation of anyone demanding or accepting a bribe.
