Flash strike derails train services

The suburban services of the Central Railway were severely affected on Friday evening after motormen refused to report for overtime duty.

The suburban services of the Central Railway (CR) were severely affected on Friday evening after motormen refused to report for overtime duty. Many trains could not leave the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST),leading to bunching of those coming to the terminus for over 45 minutes.

The railway administration had to struggle to put the train services back on track as the talk with motormen yielded no result till Friday evening. The joint forum of motormen of WR and CR had earlier said that all motormen would go on casual leave on January 26 to press for their salary and other work-related demands.

However, according to railways,no motorman from the CR has sent a leave application. Meanwhile,WR authorities have rejected the leave applications sent by the motormen. According to railway sources, the administration has decided to invoke the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) to ensure no disruption to train services on January 26.

Chief PRO of WR Shyam sunder Gupta said,“The administration has always met their genuine demands. They have been given allowance for working on national holidays.”

Motormen’s unions on both CR and WR have not been recognised by the authorities so far. The recognised unions and guards are not supporting the strike. “On the WR,they have separated the motormen’s cadre. This means that they will get promotion within the cadre and will not be transferred out of suburban section, unlike in the CR,” said an official of WR.

SMA Razi, chief PRO of CR,also said that ESMA would be invoked against striking motormen.

Both Central Railway and Western Railway have decided to provide security cover to motormen coming to work.

‘Motormen are better paid’
Senior Railway officials said the motormen are better paid than many others in railways. Five motormen in CR’s Mumbai division are paid over Rs 1 lakh a month, more than what the general manager gets. Another 97 motormen earn Rs 70,000-Rs 90,000 a month, they said.
