According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) disaster management cell, the fire, classified as a level 1, broke out around 3.43 am at the building situated inside the New Hind Mill compound at Rambhau Bhogle Marg. MFB said the fire broke out inside the electrical meter cabin but remained confined within the electrical installation. Some scrap materials present in the electrical duct also caught fire. The officials said the combustible items intensified the blaze.
“It was an old building, therefore, the flames spread smoothly through the ducts and the corridors got engulfed in smoke which led to suffocation of the victims,” said an official.
Out of the eleven victims, nine of them have been admitted to the KEM hospital, where they are undergoing treatment. The injured have been identified as Lakshmi Raut (70), Archana More (75), Pranay Tambole (28), Archana More, Mumtaz (60), Paravatibai Tambole (85), Abhish (36), Vishal Vijay More (34) and Lata Tambole (67).
Meanwhile, Razaq Khan (80) has been admitted to Nair hospital, while Savita Karade (48) has been admitted to the J J Hospital.
