Finding a Niche

Bespoke legend Kishor Bajaj’s daughter,Kresha, sketched a clown in a ball gown when she was four. Of course she’d grow up to do something out of the box

This Saturday, the heiress to Kishor Bajaj’s brand Badasaab (one of India’s oldest bespoke menswear tailors, exclusive franchise holders to Brioni, and introducers of Alan Yau’s Hakkasan and Yauatcha restaurants in Mumbai),shows her entrepreneurial bones. She launches Koecsh.com,a fashion portal that she designs clothes for and sells young, hip and anti-status accessories from.

Don’t write her off as daddy’s spoilt little girl yet,as this 25-year-old has earned her stripes at the London School of Fashion,Parsons School of Design in New York and Paris,as well as FIDM in Los Angeles.

“I wanted to do something that’s niche and still mass,” she says of her concept portal. “India lacks in street fashion. You will get local Indian wear, but nothing western that isn’t terrible. I wanted to bring street-cred via a portal. It is fashionable but the prices start at Rs 400.” Kresha speaks so softly, almost cooing, sitting at the work-in-progress Koecsh office at Pali Hill. Her parents own swathes of property in Bandra, including a three-storey home which plays host to Mumbai’s most

discreet parties.

Kresha isn’t looking to retail her clothes from other stores, but will welcome designers to make a line exclusively for her website. Interestingly, she sells vintage accessories from Dior,YSL and the ilk,but their names aren’t mentioned on the captions of the products. Only when you click on what you like will the label be mentioned. She makes a great argument for street cred saying,“You should like it,regardless of the label.”

Saturday’s launch party,at her father’s restaurant Otto Infinito, promises a peek into what a ‘Koecsh night’ is all about: a black carpet, desserts that are all noir and six cocktails designed especially by Nikhil Merchant.
