File FIR against MNS leader for digging up roads at Shivaji Park for Wi-Fi: Mayor to BMC

Deshpande said he was unaware of the proceedings in the general body meeting.

At the civic general body meeting on Friday, Mayor Sunil Prabhu instructed the BMC to file an FIR against Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) leader Sandeep Deshpande for allegedly illegally digging up roads around Shivaji Park to install a free Wi-Fi connection in the area.

The matter was raised by Shiv Sena corporator Shraddha Jhadav, who demanded that MNS be reprimanded.
During the 2012 civic elections, the Shiv Sena had promised Mumbaikars a fully Wi-Fi connected city. On Wednesday, the proposal was discussed at a meeting between Sena party president Uddhav Thackeray, Yuva Sena leader Aaditya Thackeray, Prabhu and Municipal Commissioner Sitaram Kunte.

“Without any official clearance from the civic body, MNS began digging and adjusting cables near Shivaji Park. When BMC officials tried to intervene and stop the illegal work, MNS party workers turned it into a heated discussion,” said Jadhav.

“If a common man would have dug up the roads illegally to set up a Wi-Fi system, the BMC would have lodged an FIR against him. Therefore, I instruct the civic body to file an FIR against the public representative concerned, confiscate the cables and hand these over to the police. The MNS is playing such tactics to ensure the Shiv Sena does not get mileage out of its own Wi-Fi project,” said Prabhu.

Deshpande said he was unaware of the proceedings in the general body meeting.
