Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday urged the Central Government to set up a permanent centre in Mumbai for the development of India’s maritime sector.

Speaking at a review meeting on preparations for India Maritime Week 2025, which will be held at NESCO Exhibition Centre, Goregaon, from October 27 to 31, Fadnavis said the initiative would not only boost Maharashtra’s development globally but also establish India Maritime Week as a world-class maritime platform.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to attend the event on one of the days. The event will be inaugurated by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on October 27.

The review meeting was attended by Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal, Deputy CM Ajit Pawar, Fisheries and Ports Minister Nitesh Rane, Chief Secretary Rajesh Kumar, and senior officials.

Outlining Mumbai’s potential as an economic hub, Fadnavis said, “Maharashtra has always played a pivotal role in India’s development.

India Maritime Week 2025 will open up significant opportunities for maritime growth at both the national and state levels. The state provides a conducive environment for maritime investments, and this event will further catalyse progress.”

Pointing to the new shipbuilding policy, capacity expansions at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority, and emerging ports as creating fresh opportunities for the sector, the CM said, “Maharashtra is writing a new chapter in India’s maritime development.”

Over 100 countries, thousands of delegates, domestic and international industry participants, and more than 500 exhibitors are expected to attend, along with ministerial-level representatives from seven partner countries, with an anticipated footfall of around 1 lakh.
