Absconding for 14 years, after he managed to flee custody while being taken to Yerawada Jail over a criminal case, the Vasai Police finally nabbed Imtiyaz Aamir Khan Hamza, 33, from a railway station on July15.
On Monday, he was produced before Mumbai Metroploitan Magistrate Court and sent to remand to Arthur Road Jail.
The railway police, under whose jurisdiction the arrest was made, has registered a case against Imtiyaz under IPC section 224 ( Resistance or obstruction by a person to his lawful apprehension ) and 328 (Causing hurt by means of poison) of Indian Penal Code.
“On June 26, 2000, Imtiyaz was brought in from Yerwada Jail in Pune to Bandra Metropolitan Magistrate court for an extortion case. After the court hearing was over he was being taken back to Yerwada Jail by the train with three jail staff. In the train, Imityaz offered juice to the constables. . Initially the jail staff refused to accept the juice, but when the accused drank the juice they were convinced and had their share.
Apparently, he had mixed sleeping pills in it and the three constables deputed for security slept and he fled after the train stopped at Kalyan Railway station,” said a senior officer from CST police station.
“There are more than 20 offenses mostly of extortion registered against him in various police station in Mumbai,”added the officer. Imtiyaz is a son of an engineer and a resident of Worli, B.D.D Chawl who later shifted to Borivali. He could not appear for his 12th standard examination as he was arrested in an assault case and was sent in judicial custody, officers added.
