The state government is seeking to expedite the Dharavi makeover project while also scouting for alternative sites where slumdwellers who reside on hill slopes can be rehabilitated.
A state government official said that in a meeting on Monday, which was attended by senior officials,Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan asked officials to speed up the Dharavi rehabilitation project. The state government has already allowed the MHADA to redevelop Sector 5 in Dharavi.
The official added that a file regarding the issue of a notification on the Dharavi project and amendment to the Development Control Regulations (DCR) had been sent to the Chief Ministers office.
The official said to ensure a slum-free Mumbai,it is also necessary to rehabilitate the people who reside in slums on hill slopes in the city, especially in the eastern suburbs such as Ghatkopar. There have been a number of landslides at these sites, causing loss of lives.
The official pointed out that there were difficulties in rehabilitating the slumdwellers in situ and hence, the District Collector and Slum Rehabilitation Authority have been asked to conduct a survey to scour for alternative sites, like no-development zones, where these people can be housed.
