Encounter specialist Daya Nayak, who is a Senior Police Inspector with the Crime Branch of Mumbai police, was Tuesday promoted to the rank of Assistant Commissioner (ACP). He is set to retire on Thursday.
Besides Nayak, three other senior inspectors were promoted to the rank of ACP – Jeevan Kharat, Deepak Dalvi, and Pandurang Pawar.
Nayak, of Nana Patekar-starrer Ab Tak Chhappan fame, is among a handful of “encounter specialists” who are well-known in the police force for having gunned down several gangsters linked to Dawood Ibrahim and Chhota Rajan in the 1990s.
Nayak’s contributions as head of the crucial Unit-9 of the elite crime detection wing of the Mumbai police have been instrumental in cracking major cases.
He has also been involved in the investigation of some sensational and high-profile cases of recent times, including the firing at actor Salman Khan’s house by members of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, the killing of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Baba Siddique, and the attack on actor Saif Ali Khan by an intruder.
Nayak joined the Mumbai police in 1995 and was first posted at Juhu station. He shot to fame after becoming a key member of the squad involved in eliminating gangsters during the 1990s and early 2000s. His first encounter was in December 1996, when he shot down two members of the Chhota Rajan gang. So far, Nayak has reportedly been involved in 84 encounters.
In 2006, he was suspended from service for possessing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income, before being reinstated in 2011. He was subsequently posted at Amboli police station in Mumbai, where he nabbed several drug suppliers. Later, Nayak was transferred to the Mumbai Crime Branch.
