With increasing traffic on roads, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has proposed initiatives to make Mumbais roads more pedestrian-friendly. To make more walking space available on key roads, the civic body is considering elevated road humps over busy junctions in the city for vehicles, thus facilitating pedestrian-crossing on roads below.
As a first, the BMC is planning to build such a hump over the busy traffic junction on M.G Road near BSNL building from Bombay Gymkhana to Cross Maidan over which vehicles will ply. The existing road, below the hump will be used by pedestrians. The junction has been posing difficulties for pedestrians trying to cross the road with traffic coming in from three sides.
Underground utilities pose a big challenge while carrying out underground works in Mumbai. Road humps are therefore a better option, said a senior official from BMCs road department.
Road humps are elevated roads and unlike flyovers, their height is just above the ground level leaving just enough space for pedestrians to walk under them. We have invited consultants who will carry out a feasibility study for the same, R A Rajeev, additional municipal commissioner (roads) said.
Walkers plaza near Crawford Market
To decongest the busy market area near Crawford Market, the BMC is considering teaming up its underground parking project with building a walkers plaza outside the market opposite the Police Commissioners Office. Crawford Market junction is one of the seven places in South Mumbai where the BMC will build underground parking lots at a cost of Rs 444 cr. The area outside Crawford market is extremely chaotic as it is a hub for middle class shoppers. When the underground parking is being built, there is a possibility to convert the ground above it into a walkers plaza, Rajeev said. The Urban Mass Transit Project is the consultant that is currently studying the feasibility of the project. Many cities in India and across the world have made crowded market junctions vehicle free but Mumbai, the financial capital of the country,is yet to have a walkers plaza.
