Drunk driver mows down two-year-old,on the run

Senior Police Inspector D Jodgujari of the Shivaji Nagar police station said,“The incident took place Tuesday around 11:15 pm when Imran was crossing the road to go to a grocery shop opposite to his home. While he was crossing the street,a black Scorpio that was coming at high speed knocked him down.” Soon residents of the area gathered and surrounded the car,compelling the two occupants to come out. Scared of the angry mob,they volunteered to take the boy to a private hospital. However,when they reached the hospital,the hospital authorities advised them to take the boy to Rajawadi hospital for medical treatment.

“But Imran was declared brought dead at Rajawadi Hospital. Panicked,the duo left the hospital,” said Jodgujari.

The residents of the area claimed that when the two men got out of the vehicle,they were in inebriated state and reeking of alcohol. Moreover,the residents could remember only part of the vehicle’s registration number.

“We have discovered that the occupants of the vehicle might be known to a few people in the area. We are conducting enquiries to trace them and have also detained a few people from the locality who were drinking with the occupants of the vehicle,” said Jodgujari.

Ashfaq,the boy’s father who owns a furniture manufacturing unit in the locality said,“Mohammad would regularly go to the grocery shop located opposite to his house to buy sweets after dinner. Even we were used to this routine. We never expected something like this to happen to my son. I hope the culprits will be caught and punished severely.”
