The Mumbai police Sunday arrested a doctor who runs a clinic in Chembur for allegedly trying to conduct an illegal abortion on a 19-year-old girl Saturday. Police said they picked up the doctor after a tip-off from a local NGO.
RCF police identified the suspect as Dr Sandeep Patil, who runs Madhumira clinic at Vashi Naka in Chembur. Police reached the clinic Saturday evening and took Patil as well as the 19-year-old patient in custody.
The patient was in her 19th week of pregnancy and as per law,an abortion cannot be conducted on anyone who is more than 12 weeks pregnant. We registered a complaint against Patil under IPC section 315 (Act done with intent to prevent child being born alive or to cause it to die after birth). The patient has been booked in the same case under section 312 (Voluntarily causing miscarriage) of IPC, said senior inspector Dilip Yadav.
The patient had already consumed pills that facilitate abortion, and hence had to undergo an abortion at a government hospital after the raid, another officer added.
We are checking the clinic records and are questioning the staff. We will produce Patil in court on Monday and seek his custody, said the officer.
