Discovering Japan

A Fascination for Japan is something renowned artist Ajay De and photographer Ritam Banerjee had harboured for long.

A Fascination for Japan is something renowned artist Ajay De and photographer Ritam Banerjee had harboured for long. However, the recent calamity that has hit the country made the two artists open their exhibition, titled ‘The Japanese Girl’,earlier than they had intended to. “After everything that has happened,we decided to put up the exhibition now to show our solidarity and love for the country,” explained De. The exhibition, which they refer to as “an ode to The Land of the Rising Sun”,opens today at Gallery Art and Soul,Worli, and will continue till April 6. Along with the works by both De and Banerjee, there will be live installations referring to the tragedy. The show will open with a performance of the Japanese Tea Ceremony by De’s Japanese wife,Ryoko Yoshida, and for a true traditional feel, the gallery will be decorated with a Zen garden, flags and posters. The show had been in planning for six months.
